“Gorgeous sunsets, desert night walks, campfires, good wind and good friends are just a few of the reasons we love Smith Creek,” (Jen Bohlman, Wind Seeker member).  The Nevada “Wind Seekers”  Blokart Team will be hosting the annual Smith Creek “Round-Up”  at Smith Creek Dry Lake Bed, located in Nevada’s “cowboy country”.   Located about 15 miles southwest of Austin, Nevada, Smith Creek is on State Route 722, just off of Highway 50, the “loneliest road in America”.  For you History buffs, Highway 50 parallels the famous Pony Express Route.

Since this annual event (normally held on Memorial Day weekend) has been “snowed out” for the last couple of years, in an attempt to regain those warm, windy conditions, the annual Smith Creek rendezvous will be held on the weekend of June 18 to 22 this year.  The playa surface is usually as smooth as glass and provides an ideal setting for fast racing and foolish frolicking around the fire (the newly introduced marshmallow shooters will surely be on the agenda this year).  Along with delicious supper potlucks, nightly bonfires are among the many traditions that always make this an unforgettable event.  There are also some hot springs nearby for your soaking pleasure.

If you are flying in, Smith Creek is about a three-hour drive from Reno, Nevada.  Alternatively, instead of driving yourself, catch a ride with one of the Wind Seekers folks.  Hotel accommodations can be found in the nearby town of Austin, or you can camp under the stars on the playa, where it can be so quiet, “it will hurt your ears”.  Hope to see y’all there!

Directions:  There are basically two ways to get to Smith Creek from Highway 50. One is turning off on Hwy 722, 3 miles past Middlegate (Gabbs Hwy intersects with Hwy 50), go over the steep but scenic Carroll Summit and about 6 miles past the edge of Smith Creek valley, turn off (left) on the Brown's Well Rd at 39.29031N, 117.45544W, Elev 6135. Proceed to your left, towards the lake bed end until you see the Wind Seekers caravan.  A second route is staying on Hwy 50 and turning right onto Hwy 722 to the west over Railroad Pass, then at 39.32148N, 117.43348W, elev. 6105 turning right on the short dusty dirt road to the playa.  Proceed as previously to the far end of the lake bed.
