Ivanpah 2013 March 30 through April 4, 2013

This is a non-event event that is being put together to provide NABSA members a low-key opportunity to sail Ivanpah, practice and hone your skills. Not to mention socialize and possibly participate in some awesome potlucks and campfires. NABSA has obtained the group use permit so individuals will not need to get individual use permits. There will be a group camping on the lakebed at the usual spot. All of the standard dry lakebed rules will apply with regard to being safe and taking care of the lakebed. Specific guidelines will follow. There will be a group rate setup for one of the local hotels.

This a great opportunity to have some casual landsailing fun at the fantastic location of the 2012 World Blokart Championship site. For those who were put off by the stresses and pressure of formal racing last year, this is a chance to improve skills (including dialup starts and course racing) and have fun in a much more casual way. Now there is a world class site available for anyone to sail. If you have friends who are just getting started or just want to try Blokarting, this gathering would be an excellent way to get them involved and introduce them to the sport.  As we have in the past, we’ll plan to have presentations on sailing technique and strategy by our more experienced sailors that will be especially helpful to the newbies. Be sure to pass this announcement along to anyone who might be interested, but not on the mailing list. There will be no trophies but there will be recognition of achievement in other areas that will reward and entertain the assembled competitors. Take a look at this video by Dean and Scott of Ivanpah sailing Ivanpah 2011 YTube.

If you are planning to attend, please send an email by March 15th to Pat Morrisey at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it so that we can get an early estimate for attendance. Also, please let us know if you will be staying at the hotels or camping on the lakebed. There will not be a formal registration and there will be no fees. We will pass a hat asking for donations to cover the costs of Porta-pottys and the permitting.

The BLM permit dates will be from March 28 - April 5, so that if you want to start sailing early, you can. A group rate for lodging has been set up with the hotel for the permit dates. If you plan to stay at the Primm Valley Hotel, see the accompanying document for the discount code, rates and other info.

The Ivanpah Experience

On March 25th, 2011, Blokart sailors will come to Primm, Nevada from all over the world to sail in the North American Blokart Sailing Championship.

A Blokart is a 65 pound, three-wheeled, sail powered kart invented and designed by Paul Beckett from New Zealand.  You can sail with 2, 3, 4, or 5.5 meter sails at speeds of up to 50 + MPH.  Its ingenious design lends itself to being broken down and placed in a bag that can be put in the trunk of a small car.  With simple assembly requiring no hand tools, you can be sailing within minutes of arriving at your destination.  I have carried my Blokart on commercial airline flights with a minimum heavy bag allowance.  Because I live in Michigan, I have an ice blade kit for my kart, which allows me to sail on ice.  I have a sailboat, but I am limited to summer sailing in Michigan.  With my Blokart, I can sail year-round.
